This is a two-year course designed to give students an appreciation and understanding of the English language and literature as well as translated works from other countries. Students will analyze literature and draw connections among literary works and develop an appreciation of the works and the authors. In addition, students will structure ideas and arguments in a logical, sustained, and persuasive manner.

A sequence of two of the three standard level (SL) courses completes review of the basic structures of the language with further study of the more complex structures and technical details. Students will be able to communicate in a range of situations, both written and spoken, and handle the language, grammar, and syntax accurately in a manner appropriate to cultural and social context. Students enrolled in French 5SL may be eligible for JCCC credit (College Now). NOTE: Study of French is highly recommended starting in middle school.

This course sequence review the structure of the language with further study of the more technical details. Upon completion, students will be prepared to communicate in a range of situations, written and spoken. they also will be able to handle the language, grammar, and syntax accurately in a manner appropriate to cultural and social context. NOTE: Study of French is highly recommended starting in middle school.

IB History of the Americas HL1 (H)

Prerequisite – European History H/AP is strongly recommended

History of the Americas H/AP is a junior-level course that fulfills the IB curriculum of a regional study of the Americas (U.S., Latin America, and Canada), as well as a semester of the U.S. History graduation requirement. This course covers topics from pre-Colombian history of the region through the nineteenth century with emphasis on the political, economic, and social changes of the region. If a student withdraws from the SMN IB program following their junior year, second semester U.S. History during the senior year will be required for high school graduation.

IB American Government (H)

Prerequisites – IB History of the Americas HL1 (H)

The content in the American Government portion of the IB program allow students to earn the required credit for graduation. This course focuses on the three branches of government, with special emphasis on civil liberties and civil rights. This course builds on the junior year course introduction on the creation of the U.S. Constitution and government.

IB 20th Century World History (H)

Prerequisite – IB History of the Americas 1 (H)
3374 – 1/2 Unit

This course focuses on America’s history since 1900, and emphasizes the roles of single party states, wars, and the Cold War period in 20th century world issues. In conjunction with the junior year course, the students cover all of U.S. history graduation requirement. At the conclusion of the year, students are prepared for the higher levels Group 3 IB examinations.

IB Psychology SL (H)

Prerequisite – Recommend Psychology 1

This course focuses on the systematic study of human thinking, behavior, and experience. Students will interpret and conduct research, examine ethical issues, and develop an understanding of the different levels of analysis and influences on human behavior. Students will study three core levels of analysis (biological, cognitive, and learning) as well as one study option on Abnormal Psychology.
