Exploring Medical Health Science Careers

Prerequisite – None
4145 – 1 unit (2-hour block, 1 semester)
4149 – 1 unit (1-hour block, 2 semesters)

This course is designed to develop an understanding of careers in health care-related fields. Students will investigate career options and corresponding educational requirements. Students explore the entire scope of health career opportunities and compare the demands of specific careers to individual personality traits and strengths. Students examine and practice skills related to professional success, including concepts of teamwork, critical thinking and problem-solving, communication, and employability. Advances in the health care industry are also explored. Instruction includes presentations by health care professionals. This course may not be applied to the minimum graduation requirement in science.

Medical Health Science 1

Prerequisite – Biology 1 and Exploring Medical Health Science Careers
4146 – 1 unit (2-hour block, 1 semester)
4148 – 1 unit (1-hour block, 2 semesters)

Students will study various systems of the human body and medical disorders. Additional study will include medical terminology, professional personal presentation, medical case studies, and discussions designed to increase awareness of health care delivery services. This course may not be applied to the minimum graduation requirement in science.

Medical Health Science 2

Prerequisite – Medical Health Science 1 with a “B” or better, teacher recommendation and completion of or concurrent enrollment in Human Anatomy and Physiology
4138 – 3 Units (3-hour block, 2 semesters)
4139 – 1 1/2 Units (3-hour block, 1 semester)

Students shadow health care professionals as they perform duties in hospitals and other health care facilities. Shadowing experience placement will be based upon career goals. Students receive no pay for shadowing experiences. Students provide transportation to shadow site. Certificate of health, Hepatitis B series, and TB test, administered no more than one year prior to the first day of class, are required. Course cost is $20.00. CPR and optional certification will require additional fees. Students who plan to participate in certification programs must enroll in the two-semester course. Course may qualify for JCCC advanced standing credit. This course may not be applied to the minimum graduation requirement in science.
