Independent Study is designed for students who wish to do advanced work in a specific media elective. It can be taken for up to 2.5 units of credit. Students must complete a prescribed program that has been designed in cooperation with the teacher. Cost will vary depending on student’s emphasis.

Art Portfolio Preparation

Prerequisite – Introduction to Studio Art and teacher recommendation

Art Portfolio Preparation is open to seniors and second semester juniors who are interested in furthering their art experiences after high school. Emphasis of the course includes portfolio development, preparation for college, scholarship competitions, exhibit presentation ion, and art appreciation. Minimum course cost is $40.00. Additional fees may be assessed based on the materials/media chosen by the student.

Ceramics

Prerequisite – Introduction to Studio Art
7670 – 1/2 Unit

Students will be introduced to basic methods of working with clay as an art form, as well as the history and design of ceramic art. The course includes fundamentals of three-dimensional form, design elements, hand-built and wheel-thrown pottery, glazing and firing procedures. Minimum course cost is $30.00. Additional fees may be assessed based on the materials/media chosen by the student.

Digital Photo – Art

Prerequisite – Photography 1

Students will explore further the technical skills needed to produce quality images both digitally and in the dark room. Digital photography topics include use of equipment, software, photo editing, and manipulation. Studio projects are more student directed and open ended regarding approach and subject matter. Continued exploration of the history of photography, processes/techniques, camera formats, and constructive dialogue will be incorporated. Minimum course cost is $35.00. Additional fees may be assessed based on the materials/media chosen by the student

Drawing

Prerequisite – Introduction to Studio Art
7645 – 1/2 Unit

Students will explore both traditional and non-traditional drawing techniques and materials in a studio setting. This course includes observational experiences in drawing subject matter taken from nature, the figure, man-made objects, and also incorporates print-making processes. This course is recommended to be taken early in the art student’s enrollment because of the importance rendering skills play in project development in all other art courses. Minimum course cost is $25.00. Additional fees may be assessed based on the materials/media chosen by the student.

Drawing 2

Prerequisite – Drawing

This course is designed for those who have completed Drawing and have a desire to do advanced work in drawing. Observational drawing, illustration techniques, and visual problem solving will be emphasized. Students integrate art criticism, study of contemporary art history and technology. Minimum course cost is $25.00. Additional fees may be assessed based on the materials/media chosen by the student.

Graphic Design – Art

Prerequisite – Introduction to Studio Art

Students will be introduced to a variety of graphic software programs in a Mac-based environment while exploring visual problems that effectively communicate with the viewer and focus on the elements of art and the principles of design. Imagery creation will incorporate the usage of digitizing equipment such as scanners, digital drawing tablets, digital cameras, and traditional art media. Minimum course cost is $15.00.
