This course will place the genre of Latino literature in the forefront of study. Often the same stories and themes are anthologized in adopted textbooks, but this class will delve deep into the various voices of Latino authors who have contributed to the complex disposition of the Latino experience in the United States. Study will span from historical accounts of the first Spanish explorers to contemporary Nuyorican spoken word poets. Analyzing author’s purpose, common (and uncommon) themes, and cultural influences this literature has on greater society will allow the student to cultivate a critical eye of what is deemed “classic American literature”. A knowledge of Spanish is beneficial, yet not required.
